Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance, the Assistant, Maintenance is responsible for supporting the upkeep, repair, and improvement of the company's facilities, equipment, and grounds, with a strong focus on carpentry and general building maintenance. This hands-on role will perform a wide range of maintenance activities, including constructing, repairing, and modifying office spaces, workstations, fixtures, cabinetry, shelving, and other building components. The successful candidate will also assist with preventative maintenance, light electrical and plumbing repairs, facility renovations, and organizational moves while ensuring a safe and well-maintained working environment.
Responsibilities
- Measure, cut, assemble, and finish wood and other building materials using hand tools and power tools while maintaining a high standard of craftsmanship.
- Perform a wide variety of carpentry work, including constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying walls, partitions, doors, frames, trim, cabinetry, shelving, countertops, workstations, storage systems, and other building fixtures.
- Build, repair, and install custom wood structures, office furniture, work benches, cabinets, crates, shipping fixtures, and other carpentry projects to support operational needs
- Perform drywall installation and repairs, patching, sanding, mudding, finishing, painting, and ceiling tile replacement
- Assist with office renovations, facility improvements, workspace reconfigurations, and construction projects, including framing, finishing, installing hardware, and completing interior modifications
- Install whiteboards, televisions, shelving, artwork, signage, safety equipment, bulletin boards, wall protection, and other mounted fixtures throughout the facility.
- Repair flooring, baseboards, door hardware, locks, windows, stair railings, and other structural building components as required
- Perform preventative maintenance on building systems, equipment, and facilities to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Complete minor plumbing repairs, including replacing faucets, repairing toilets, clearing drains, and addressing basic leaks.
- Perform light electrical work such as replacing lighting fixtures, switches, receptacles, LED lighting, ballasts, and other non-complex electrical components in accordance with company procedures and applicable regulations.
- Complete painting, caulking, sealing, pressure washing, and other building maintenance activities to maintain a clean and professional facility.
- Support organizational moves by disassembling, relocating, modifying, and reinstalling office furniture, workstations, storage systems, equipment, and fixtures.
- Assist with basic landscaping, exterior maintenance, seasonal cleanup, and snow removal as required.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and other maintenance equipment.
- Maintain an organized workshop and ensure all tools, equipment, and materials are properly maintained and stored.
- Monitor inventory levels of carpentry materials, hardware, lumber, fasteners, tools, and maintenance supplies, and notify the Manager when replenishment is required.
- Respond to maintenance requests in a timely manner and prioritize work based on operational requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs completed, materials used, and preventative maintenance schedules.
- Follow all health and safety procedures and report unsafe conditions, hazards, or building deficiencies immediately.
- Work collaboratively with internal departments and external contractors on maintenance, renovation, and construction projects.
- Perform other maintenance and facility-related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certificate, diploma, apprenticeship, or equivalent experience in Carpentry, Building Maintenance, Construction, or a related trade is strongly preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in carpentry, facilities maintenance, construction, or commercial building maintenance.
- Demonstrated experience with framing, finishing carpentry, cabinetry, drywall installation and repair, trim work, hardware installation, and general building repairs.
- Experience reading drawings, layouts, measurements, and construction plans is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of building materials, carpentry techniques, construction methods, and finishing practices.
- Experience performing light electrical and plumbing repairs.
- Proficiency in using a variety of hand tools, power tools, woodworking equipment, and measuring instruments.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, work at heights, and perform physically demanding work throughout the day.
- Valid driver's license
- Forklift, aerial lift, or scissor lift certification is considered an asset.
